Attributed to Jean-Baptiste-Marie Pierre (1713-1789), The Flutist, a drawing in sanguine, on laid paper with a circular watermark, the notation “frago” lower right. Frame in oak sculpted with lambrequins, 16th – 17th c and probably cut from a larger frame.

11”  8 ¾” (27.7 cm  22.2 cm)

Pierre succeeded Boucher in 1770 as First Painter to the King and served in that post until his death.

Roman school of the 17th c, Roman prisoners marching, framed drawing in sanguine on paper with an irregular piece of paper glued at the top, with small rust spots. On the reverse, in sanguine and stump pencil, Antique scene with different figures. A small label “A T” is glued on, with the number 386 in pen, as well as other old annotations in ink.

The mount carries an attribution to the 17th-18th c. artist Ludolf Bakhuisen, although comparison of this work with Bakhuisen’s oeuvre is not very convincing. More plausible is an attribution to Jacob Abrahamsz Bellevois (Rotterdam 1621 – 1676).

Backer, or Baecker, a Dutch golden age painter, who was one of the few of the period who drew the human body from studio poses.
